As a dermatologist, I’ve seen a lot of skin damage in my career. While there are many things you can do to keep your skin healthy, there are also several things you should avoid doing. Here are the top three things you should never do to your skin.

  1. Pick at Your Skin

It can be tempting to pick at pimples, blackheads, or scabs on your skin, but it’s important to resist the urge. Picking at your skin can cause further irritation and damage, leading to scarring, infection, and even permanent discoloration. When you pick at a pimple, you can push bacteria and oil deeper into your skin, making the pimple worse and potentially causing a more severe breakout.

To avoid the temptation to pick at your skin, it’s important to keep your hands away from your face. Wash your hands regularly, especially before touching your face. If you have an area of your skin that’s particularly tempting to pick, cover it with a bandage or patch to prevent yourself from touching it.

  1. Use Harsh Products

Using harsh products on your skin can lead to irritation, dryness, and even allergic reactions. Harsh soaps, exfoliants, and acne treatments can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, flakiness, and even eczema.

It’s important to use products that are gentle on your skin. Look for products that are labeled “fragrance-free,” “hypoallergenic,” and “non-comedogenic,” which means they won’t clog your pores. Avoid products that contain alcohol, which can be drying, and use a moisturizer to help keep your skin hydrated.

  1. Skip Sun Protection

Sun damage is one of the leading causes of skin aging and skin cancer. Skipping sun protection can lead to sunburn, age spots, and wrinkles, as well as an increased risk of developing skin cancer. It’s important to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays every day, even when it’s cloudy or cool outside.

To protect your skin from the sun, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Wear protective clothing, such as a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and seek shade during the sun’s peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

In conclusion, taking good care of your skin is important for maintaining its health and appearance. To keep your skin looking and feeling its best, avoid picking at your skin, use gentle products, and always protect your skin from the sun. By following these three simple rules, you can help prevent damage to your skin and keep it looking beautiful for years to come.
