The Secret of Using a Good Sunscreen

The Secret of Using a Good Sunscreen

As a dermatologist, I’ve seen many patients with sun-damaged skin, including sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer. One of the most effective ways to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is to use a good sunscreen. But what makes a sunscreen “good”? In this article, I’ll share with you the secret to using a good sunscreen and how to choose the right one for your skin.

The Basics of Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a type of lotion, spray, gel, or powder that is applied to the skin to protect it from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. There are two types of UV radiation that can damage your skin: UVA and UVB. UVA rays can penetrate deep into the skin and cause long-term damage, such as wrinkles and age spots, while UVB rays are responsible for sunburn.

The SPF (sun protection factor) rating of a sunscreen tells you how much protection it provides against UVB rays. For example, an SPF 30 sunscreen provides 30 times more protection against UVB rays than if you weren’t wearing sunscreen at all. However, SPF does not provide any information about protection against UVA rays. Look for a “broad-spectrum” sunscreen, which protects against both UVA and UVB radiation.

The Secret to Using a Good Sunscreen

Now that you know the basics of sunscreen, let me share the secret to using a good sunscreen: you need to apply enough of it and reapply it frequently.

Most people don’t apply enough sunscreen to their skin. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using at least one ounce (enough to fill a shot glass) of sunscreen to cover your entire body. You should also apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before sun exposure to allow it to absorb into the skin.

To get the full SPF protection, you need to reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more frequently if you are swimming or sweating. Even if you are using a water-resistant sunscreen, it is still important to reapply it regularly.

Choosing the Right Sunscreen

When choosing a sunscreen, look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. If you have sensitive skin, choose a sunscreen that is labeled as “hypoallergenic” or “fragrance-free.” If you have dry skin, look for a sunscreen that contains moisturizing ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid.

If you’re going to be spending a lot of time in the water or sweating, choose a water-resistant sunscreen. Water-resistant sunscreens provide protection for up to 80 minutes in the water, while very water-resistant sunscreens provide protection for up to 120 minutes.

Remember that the secret to using a good sunscreen is to apply enough of it and to reapply it frequently. Sunscreen is an essential part of your daily skincare routine, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors. By using a good sunscreen, you can protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s UV radiation and keep your skin looking healthy and youthful for years to come.
