Sunscreen: Go Ahead. Slather It On!

Sunscreen: Go Ahead. Slather It On!

As a dermatologist, I can’t stress enough the importance of wearing sunscreen every day. It’s one of the most effective ways to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun, including premature aging and skin cancer. However, there are still some misconceptions about sunscreen that need to be addressed.

In this article, I’ll be discussing the importance of sunscreen, how to choose the right one for your skin, and how to apply it properly.

Why Wear Sunscreen?

The sun emits harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation that can cause skin damage, including sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. There are two types of UV radiation that can damage your skin: UVA and UVB.

UVA rays penetrate the skin deeply and are responsible for premature aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and can also contribute to the development of skin cancer.

It’s important to note that both UVA and UVB radiation can damage your skin, regardless of the season. Even on cloudy days or during the winter, UV rays can still penetrate the skin and cause damage.

How to Choose the Right Sunscreen

Choosing the right sunscreen can be a daunting task, given the vast array of products on the market. Here are some tips to help you choose the right sunscreen for your skin:

  1. Look for “broad-spectrum” protection: This means that the sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB radiation.
  2. Choose a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30: SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB radiation, while SPF 50 blocks 98%.
  3. Consider your skin type: If you have oily skin, look for a non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) formula. If you have dry skin, choose a moisturizing formula.
  4. Consider any skin sensitivities: If you have sensitive skin, look for a sunscreen that is fragrance-free and hypoallergenic.
  5. Choose a product you like: It’s important to choose a sunscreen that you enjoy using, whether it’s a spray, lotion, or stick.

How to Apply Sunscreen Properly

Now that you’ve chosen the right sunscreen for your skin, it’s important to apply it properly to get the maximum protection.

  1. Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure: This allows the sunscreen to absorb into the skin and provide maximum protection.
  2. Use enough sunscreen: The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using about one ounce of sunscreen (equivalent to a shot glass) to cover the entire body.
  3. Reapply sunscreen every two hours: Sunscreen can wear off or be washed off by sweat or water, so it’s important to reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.
  4. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your face: Many people forget to apply sunscreen to their face, but it’s one of the most important areas to protect.
  5. Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin: Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to areas such as the tops of your feet, ears, and back of your neck.

The Bottom Line

Sunscreen is a crucial component of a healthy skin care routine. By protecting your skin from harmful UV radiation, you can prevent premature aging and reduce your risk of skin cancer. Remember to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and to apply it properly. Slather it on and enjoy the sun safely!
